In 1852, the Philadelphia Mint produced this gold quarter eagle, a denomination representing two and a half dollars. Struck from 0.900 fine gold with a precious metal weight of 0.12094 troy ounces, this coin is a survivor from the pre-1933 era of American circulating coinage. The design itself enjoyed a remarkably long production run, remaining the standard for the denomination from 1840 all the way to 1907. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date 1852 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a proud heraldic eagle guards a shield draped across its chest. The bird is surrounded by the legend naming the United States of America, with the abbreviated denomination displayed below as 2 1/2 D.
