In 1852, the Philadelphia Mint produced a significant run of twenty-dollar gold coins, striking over two million pieces. This substantial issue, known as the Liberty Head Double Eagle, represents a fascinating era of American coinage. Struck with a purity of 90 percent gold, each coin contains approximately 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal, giving it a heavy, substantial feel in the hand. The obverse of the coin features the classic profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a bun with loose curls cascading down her neck. She wears a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1852 anchored at the bottom. This particular specimen is certified in About Uncirculated 58 (AU-58) condition, preserving the intricate details of the design with only minor wear from its brief time in circulation. On the reverse, a majestic heraldic eagle holds an olive branch and arrows, shielded by a U.S. crest. The legend surrounding the eagle reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the denomination TWENTY D. Because it was struck at the main minting facility in Philadelphia, the coin bears no mint mark, leaving the space below the eagle clean and open.
