1852 Large Cent BU (Brown)

0.0000 troy oz 1852 Brilliant Unc

In the mid nineteenth century, American pocket change looked remarkably different than it does today. The 1852 Large Cent is a striking representative of this era, minted from pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint. This substantial coin predates the smaller cents we are familiar with today, offering a tactile connection to the everyday commerce of pre Civil War America. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin features the Classic Head Liberty profile. Liberty faces left, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1852 positioned below the bust. The reverse of the coin is framed by the bold inscription of the issuing nation, United States of America. Inside this circular text, a delicate wreath wraps around the central denomination, which is clearly stated as One Cent. This specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, displaying a rich brown coloration that highlights the preserved details of Gobrecht's mid century design.
