1853/2 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle AU-58 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1853 PCGS

In the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced the impressive twenty-dollar gold double eagle. The 1853 edition, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is a prominent representative of this era. Because it was minted at the main Philadelphia facility, this coin features no mint mark, leaving the space below the design clean and open. The obverse of this gold coin features a classic profile of Liberty. She wears a diadem bordered with pearls, which clearly displays the inscription LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the year 1853 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle stretches its wings, supporting a shield upon its chest. Above the eagle, an oval of thirteen stars is bathed in rays of light. The outer rim is inscribed with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY D. This substantial coin contains nearly a full ounce of gold, specifically 0.9675 troy ounces, with a purity of 90 percent.
