0.1209 troy oz .900 1853 Almost Unc

Struck in 1853, this United States gold coin represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted in Philadelphia, the $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of the precious metal. This particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of its mid-nineteenth-century design. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original American colonies. The year 1853 is positioned directly below her bust. On the reverse, a proud heraldic eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest. The bird is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination, 2 1/2 D. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this enduring design was minted for a span of sixty-seven years, from 1840 to 1907, making it one of the longest-running series in United States coinage history.
