1853 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle AU-55 NGC

0.9675 troy oz .900 1853 NGC

This impressive twenty dollar gold piece, minted in 1853, represents a classic era of American coinage. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, the coin has survived more than a century and a half, receiving a certified grade of AU-55 (About Uncirculated). While countless examples of this gold issue were melted down over the decades, this particular specimen remains to tell the story of its era. The design, created by James B. Longacre, was produced from 1850 to 1907. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is crowned with a hair band bearing her name, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle with a protective shield over its chest, crowned by another cluster of thirteen stars. The surrounding inscriptions clearly mark the issuing authority as the United States of America, along with the twenty-dollar denomination.
