In 1853, the Philadelphia Mint produced a substantial run of 1,261,326 gold double eagles, each carrying a face value of twenty dollars. These massive gold pieces were struck from 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. Because they were minted at the main facility in Philadelphia, they do not bear a mint mark, a common characteristic for coins of this era originating from the nation's primary minting facility. This specific coin has survived the decades in remarkable condition, graded as Almost Uncirculated 55 (AU-55). At this grade, the coin retains much of its original luster and detail, showing only minor wear on the highest points of the design from its brief time in commerce before being saved for posterity. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1853 positioned below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the legend indicating the country of origin and the denomination of twenty dollars.
