In the middle of the nineteenth century, daily transactions in the United States relied on copper coins much larger than the pennies we use today. This 1853 large cent represents the twilight years of these substantial copper pieces, which served as a cornerstone of everyday commerce for nearly a century. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this particular specimen has survived in an exceptional state of preservation, graded Mint State 63 (MS-63) with a rich brown coloration. The obverse features the classic Braided Hair portrait of Liberty facing left, her hair bound up elegantly, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1853 is boldly stamped beneath the bust. On the reverse, a simple wreath encircles the denomination, surrounded by the legend proclaiming the nation of origin. Unlike modern coinage, this piece contains pure copper and carries no mint mark, indicating its origin at the nation's primary coining facility in Philadelphia. Examining such a well-preserved survivor offers a direct window into the physical currency that fueled the growing American economy in the decade preceding the Civil War.
