1854 $1 Indian Head Gold Type 2 MS-62 NGC
In the middle of 1854, the United States Mint introduced a distinct transformation to its smallest circulating coin. The gold dollar, which first entered American commerce in 1849, underwent a physical evolution. To make the tiny coin easier to handle, its diameter was expanded from 13.5 millimeters to 15 millimeters. Along with this physical enlargement came a brand-new aesthetic, known to collectors as the Type 2 design. This updated look borrowed its visual theme from the three-dollar gold piece. The obverse features an Indian Princess rendered in remarkably high relief. Because of this deep, sculptural relief, the minting process faced technical hurdles. During production, metal did not always flow fully into the dies, which frequently left the central portion of the reverse side lightly struck. As a result, many of these Type 2 coins exhibit a characteristic weakness in the middle of the date and on the letters LL in the word dollar. The reverse of this 1854 issue displays the denomination and the year of mintage nestled inside a decorative wreath. This particular specimen is certified in Mint State 62 (MS-62), preserving the delicate details of a design that was only minted for a very brief window. The Indian Princess motif was utilized on Philadelphia issues from the end of 1854 through 1855, on branch mint coins in 1855, and on the San Francisco issue of 1856, before the design evolved yet again. The entire United States gold dollar series eventually came to an end when production ceased in 1889.
