In 1854, the United States Mint introduced a striking new design for its smallest gold denomination. This coin represents the Type 2 variety of the Indian Head gold dollar, a design that was produced for only a very brief period. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this specific coin survived the decades in an extraordinary state of preservation, earning a high certified grade of Mint State 64 (MS-64). With a composition of 90 percent gold, this tiny treasure contains 0.0484 troy ounces of precious metal. The Philadelphia Mint produced 783,943 of these one-dollar coins in 1854, and because they carried no mint mark, the fields remain clean of any branch mint lettering. The reverse of the coin clearly displays the denomination and date, arranged as "1 DOLLAR 1854" within a decorative wreath.
