In 1854, the United States introduced an unusual denomination to its circulating currency: the three dollar gold piece. This specific coin represents the inaugural year of this fascinating series, which was struck in 90 percent pure gold. Because vast numbers of these coins were melted down in subsequent decades, the surviving population is far smaller than the original mintage of 138,618 suggests, making surviving specimens particularly intriguing to study.
