0.0000 troy oz 1854 Almost Unc

In the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced a denomination that seems almost unimaginable today: the half cent. This 1854 copper coin represents one of the final chapters for this tiny denomination, which was minted from 1793 until 1857, when public demand for the tiny value finally faded away. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the obverse of this piece displays the head of Lady Liberty facing left, her hair secured by a coronet. Thirteen stars encircle her portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date 1854 positioned below. The reverse features a simple wreath enclosing the words HALF CENT, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Having survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, this copper coin offers a tangible connection to the everyday commerce of pre-Civil War America. With a mintage of just 55,358 pieces, it stands as a fascinating survivor from an era when even a fraction of a penny held real purchasing power.
