This 1854 silver half dollar, minted in New Orleans, represents a fascinating era of American coinage. Struck with a purity of 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. It stands as a remarkable survivor from a total mintage of 5,240,000 pieces, preserved in Extra Fine condition. The obverse design showcases Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield. Below this central figure, the date 1854 is clearly visible. This classic depiction was created by Christian Gobrecht, capturing the artistic spirit of the mid-nineteenth century. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted perched on a branch while clutching three arrows. A shield is positioned across the bird's chest, mirroring the shield on the obverse.
