1854 Three Cent Silver AU

In the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced one of its most diminutive and fascinating denominations: the silver three-cent piece. The 1854 issue represents a intriguing moment in this short-lived series. Struck in Philadelphia, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing a mere 0.0193 troy ounces of precious metal. The visual presentation of this tiny coin is remarkably detailed for its scale. On the obverse, a prominent six-pointed star serves as the backdrop for an ornamental shield. The reverse features an ornate, stylized Roman numeral III, which clearly denotes its three-cent face value. Designed by James Longacre, this coin stands as a testament to the intricate engraving work required to fit such a complex design onto an incredibly small canvas. This particular specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, meaning it retains much of its original detail and luster from the year 1854.
