In 1854, the United States Mint produced a remarkably diminutive silver piece that holds a special place in American numismatic history. Containing just 0.0193 troy ounces of silver, this tiny denomination represents the smallest coin ever issued for general circulation in the nation's history. Its delicate size makes it an intriguing artifact of mid nineteenth century commerce. The visual design, created by James Longacre, is both elegant and distinctive. The obverse side features a prominent shield set against a large, six-pointed star, surrounded by the date of manufacture, 1854. On the reverse, the coin displays the Roman numeral III, clearly denoting its three cent face value.
