1854 Three Cent Silver VG

In 1854, the United States Mint produced a distinctive tiny silver coin with a face value of three cents. This particular year marks a fascinating design transition. Known as the Type 2 design, this variety introduced delicate design enhancements to the small canvas, including extra outlines around the central star on the obverse and decorative elements on the reverse. The obverse of the coin features a prominent six-pointed star bearing a central shield, with the year 1854 inscribed below. On the reverse, the Roman numeral III is nestled inside a stylized C-shaped ornament, surrounded by olive leaves and arrows. These added details distinguish the Type 2 design from its predecessor, showcasing the intricate artistry achievable on a coin containing just 0.0193 troy ounces of silver. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this historic coin is composed of 75 percent silver and 25 percent copper, with a purity level of 0.900. Having survived for well over a century, this specimen is in Very Good condition, offering a tangible look at mid-nineteenth-century American minting history.
