1855-1859 France Gold 100 Francs Napoleon III Avg Circ
During the mid nineteenth century, France produced some of its most impressive gold coinage, including these substantial 100 Francs pieces. Struck between 1855 and 1859, each coin represents the height of the French Second Empire under the rule of Napoleon III, who held power from 1852 to 1870. Minted across several facilities throughout the country, these pieces are composed of 90 percent pure gold, containing 0.9330 ounces of actual gold weight. The obverse of the coin showcases a detailed portrait of Emperor Napoleon III, a design crafted by the artist Jean Jacques Barre. On the reverse, the design either presents the denomination and year of issue surrounded by a wreath, or displays the formal French coat of arms. These surviving specimens are preserved in average circulated condition, bearing the authentic marks of their journey through nineteenth-century commerce.
