1855 2.419 oz $50 Kellogg Restrike GEM UNC PCGS (w/Display)
In 2001, a remarkable minting project brought a legendary mid nineteenth century design back to life. Using the actual coin press from the historic San Francisco Mint, workers produced a limited run of 5,000 restrikes of the massive 1855 fifty dollar gold piece. The metal used for these pieces carries an extraordinary pedigree, sourced directly from Kellogg and Humbert Company gold ingots that lay lost at the bottom of the ocean for over a century after the sinking of the S.S. Central America. Each of these impressive specimens contains 2.419 ounces of gold with a purity of 0.887, weighing a total of 1309 grains. The obverse features a left facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the name Kellogg and Co., all encircled by thirteen stars. The date 1855 is clearly visible at the bottom. On the reverse, an eagle bearing a shield on its breast is surrounded by the words San Francisco California, with the fifty dollar denomination displayed below. This certified Gem Brilliant Uncirculated piece offers a tangible connection to the California Gold Rush era. Because it was struck using original machinery and historic treasure, it serves as a fascinating bridge between nineteenth century gold minting and modern preservation efforts.
