1855-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle XF

0.9675 troy oz .900 1855 Extra Fine

In 1855, the San Francisco branch of the United States Mint struck a significant run of double eagles, totaling 879,675 pieces. Each of these substantial coins contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, representing a purity level of 0.900. This issue belongs to the celebrated era of pre-1933 American gold coinage, carrying with it the physical legacy of early western minting. The obverse side presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a delicate hair band inscribed with her name, while a ring of thirteen stars surrounds her profile. The year 1855 is positioned at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a majestic heraldic eagle guards a shield placed over its chest. Above the eagle, another group of thirteen stars forms a circle, which is itself encircled by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The denomination, TWENTY D., is inscribed at the base, completing this classic design by James B. Longacre.
