1856 $1 Indian Head Gold Dollar Type 3 Slanted 5 AU

0.0484 troy oz .900 1856 Almost Unc

In 1856, the United States Mint produced a fascinating variation of the small gold dollar. This particular issue, struck in 0.900 fine gold, features the Type 3 design. Observers will notice a distinctive slant to the number 5 in the date on the reverse, a characteristic detail that captures the attention of numismatic enthusiasts. Because many of these early gold coins were melted down in later years, surviving specimens are especially intriguing to study. The obverse of this one dollar coin presents a profile of Liberty adorned with an stylized Native American feather headdress, encircled by the inscription "United States of America". On the reverse, a simple yet elegant wreath frames the face value of "1 DOLLAR" and the 1856 year of issue. Preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, this tiny gold piece offers a wonderful glimpse into mid nineteenth century American coinage design and production techniques.
