0.0000 troy oz 1856 Very Fine

In the final years of the United States large cent, the Philadelphia Mint produced a fascinating variety of the copper penny. This 1856 issue, preserved in Very Fine condition, showcases the Braided Hair design, a style that graced the nation's coppers from 1839 to 1857. The obverse features a profile of Liberty, her hair neatly bound, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Below her portrait sits the date, notable for the distinct slant of the numeral five. On the reverse, the denomination of one cent is enclosed within a delicate wreath, which is itself surrounded by the legend naming the United States of America. This coin represents a bygone era of heavy copper coinage before the nation transitioned to smaller, lighter cents.
