In 1856, the San Francisco Mint produced a distinctive gold coin with a face value of three dollars. This particular issue is notable for its low mintage, with only 34,500 pieces struck. The coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing approximately 0.1451 troy ounces of precious metal. The reverse side of the coin displays the denomination and the date of production, arranged as "3 DOLLARS 1856". Just below the date, the "S" mint mark is clearly visible, indicating its origin from the branch mint in California. This specimen has survived in remarkable condition, graded as About Uncirculated 58 (AU-58), preserving the fine details of its mid-nineteenth-century craftsmanship.
