In 1856, the San Francisco Mint struck 105,100 of these five-dollar gold pieces, each containing 0.2419 troy ounces of 90 percent pure gold. Finding examples of these early Western branch-mint issues in uncirculated condition is an exceptional occurrence, as most entered heavy circulation or were melted down over the decades. This particular specimen is certified at a grade of Mint State 61 (MS-61), highlighting its survival in a state of preservation rarely seen for this issue. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars and the 1856 date. On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings holds an olive branch and arrows, encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE D. The small 'S' mintmark beneath the eagle denotes its origin at the young California minting facility.
