In the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced its most diminutive and lightweight silver coin. This 1856 three-cent piece, preserved in Extra Fine condition, belongs to the Type II design category. It is distinguished by a double outline framing the central star, a subtle detail that sets it apart from earlier issues. The front of this tiny silver coin showcases a shield set against a six-pointed star, accompanied by the clearly legible date of 1856. On the reverse, the design features the Roman numeral III, representing its face value of three cents. This specific variety was designed by James B. Longacre and struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
