1857 $1 Indian Head Gold Dollar AU
In 1857, the Philadelphia Mint produced a remarkable tiny gold treasure. Struck from 90 percent pure gold with a weight containing approximately 0.0484 troy ounces of precious metal, this coin is a fascinating survivor of pre-1933 American coinage. Over the decades, vast numbers of these gold pieces were melted down, making the remaining specimens highly intriguing to study and appreciate. The obverse features a distinct depiction of Liberty adorned in a Native American headdress, a design style that characterizes this celebrated series. On the reverse, a delicate wreath frames the denomination of 1 DOLLAR and the year of issue, 1857. This specific coin survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of its mid-nineteenth-century craftsmanship.
