In 1857, the Philadelphia Mint produced a relatively small run of three-dollar gold coins, totaling just 20,891 pieces. Because these coins were struck at the main minting facility in Pennsylvania, they do not bear a mint mark. This particular survivor has been certified in About Uncirculated 58 (AU-58) condition, preserving the intricate details of its mid-nineteenth-century design. Struck in 0.900 fine gold with a gold content of 0.1451 troy ounces, the coin features inscriptions on its surfaces that reflect its origin and denomination. The legible lettering includes the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA alongside the denomination of 3 DOLLARS and the year 1857. This denomination remains one of the most unusual and intriguing denominations in the history of United States coinage.
