In 1857, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a striking departure from traditional coinage design with the Flying Eagle Cent. This coin, composed of a copper and nickel alloy, represents a brief but highly celebrated design era that spanned only from 1856 to 1858. This particular piece is preserved in Fine condition, showing the clear details of its mid nineteenth century craftsmanship. The obverse of the coin features a dynamic depiction of an eagle in mid flight, soaring gracefully across the field. Encircling this central image is the legend of the issuing nation, reading from the left side of the coin up and around to the right, with the year 1857 anchored at the bottom. This active, naturalistic portrayal of the national bird was a bold aesthetic choice for the era. On the reverse, a detailed wreath frames the denomination. The central inscription reads ONE CENT in bold, clear lettering. Designed by James B.
