The year 1857 marked the end of an era for United States coinage, representing the final issue of the half cent denomination. Struck in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint, this particular issue is highly regarded for its place at the conclusion of a long-running American coin tradition. With a original mintage of just 35,180 pieces, these coins represent a fascinating moment of transition in the nation's early monetary system. The obverse of the coin features the Braided Hair interpretation of Liberty, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
