During the mid nineteenth century, unique fractional gold pieces emerged to fill a vital need for small-denomination currency. This 1857 octagonal quarter-dollar is a remarkable survivor from that era, struck in Philadelphia and bearing the P mint mark. Containing 0.0121 troy ounces of gold, its unusual eight-sided shape immediately distinguishes it from standard circulating coinage. The obverse features a classic representation of Liberty, while the reverse displays the denomination and the year of production. The inscription DOLLAR alongside the date 1857 remains visible, marking its place in American numismatic history. This specific specimen has been certified in Mint State 63 (MS-63) condition.
