1857-S $20 Lib Gold SS Central America 20A MS-64 PCGS
Deep within the ocean, a remarkable chapter of American history was preserved for over a century. This 1857 Liberty Head double eagle, minted in San Francisco, was once lost at sea during the tragic sinking of the S.S. Central America. Born from the height of the California Gold Rush, this twenty dollar coin represents a time of incredible expansion and wealth creation in the American West. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, the coin features the classic Type 1 design by James B. Longacre. The obverse depicts a left-facing bust of Liberty wearing a coronet, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the 1857 date positioned below. On the reverse, a majestic eagle with outstretched wings guards a central shield. This specific coin belongs to the distinct Spiked Shield variety, characterized by a unique die feature near the shield. The reverse also bears the San Francisco mint mark and the abbreviated denomination. Having survived both the rugged frontier of the 1850s and a historic shipwreck, this specimen remains in an extraordinary state of preservation. It has been officially certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), displaying remarkable detail and luster that survived decades beneath the waves.
