1857-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle AU

0.9675 troy oz .900 1857 Almost Unc

Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1857 double eagle represents a fascinating moment in nineteenth-century American coinage. As a Type 1 issue, it belongs to a design family that was produced from 1850 to 1907. Over the decades, many of these massive gold pieces were melted down, making surviving specimens particularly intriguing to explore today. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, designed by James B. Longacre. Her hair band is inscribed with the word "Liberty," and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands proudly with a shield on its chest, beneath a canopy of thirteen stars. The legend "United States of America" and the "Twenty D." denomination frame the majestic central image. This historic coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. Preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, it offers a remarkably clear look at the craftsmanship of the early San Francisco Mint.
