In 1857, the branch of the United States Mint in San Francisco struck a limited run of gold half eagles. Out of an original mintage of just 87,000 pieces, this surviving specimen has been certified in About Uncirculated 55 (AU-55) condition, preserving a remarkable level of detail from its mid-nineteenth-century production. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of pure gold within its 90 percent gold composition. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle this central image, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, Gobrecht's design displays a heraldic eagle bearing a shield across its chest. The bird is framed by the legend of the issuing nation, United States of America, and the five-dollar denomination. This piece offers an intriguing look at early western branch minting history.
