1857 Three Cent Silver VG

In the decade preceding the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced one of its most diminutive and intriguing denominations: the silver three-cent piece. The 1857 issue, struck at the main Philadelphia facility, represents a fascinating era of experimental metallurgy and design in American coinage. With a composition consisting of 75 percent silver and 25 percent copper, this small coin contains just under 0.02 troy ounces of pure silver. The visual presentation of this coin is remarkably distinct. The front features a prominent six-pointed star, at the center of which rests a decorative shield. On the reverse, the design showcases a large Roman numeral three, styled as III, which clearly denotes its face value. This particular specimen has survived in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in mid-nineteenth-century commerce while retaining the core elements of its historic imagery. Designed by James Longacre, this issue had a total mintage of 1,042,000 pieces. Today, exploring these tiny silver treasures offers a direct window into the pre-1933 monetary system of the United States, revealing how everyday citizens once conducted their smallest transactions.
