1858 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle XF

In 1858, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 47,377 gold quarter eagles. Minted without a mint mark, these 2.50 dollar coins are composed of 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.1209 troy ounces of the precious metal. This particular survivor has been preserved in Extra Fine condition, offering a clear look at a design from a bygone era of American coinage. The obverse of the coin showcases a profile of Liberty adorned in a full headdress. She is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the word Liberty and the 1858 date clearly visible. This side of the coin was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, whose artistic vision brought a unique texture to the gold piece. On the reverse, a bald eagle stands as the central focus. Surrounding the national bird are the inscriptions United States of America and the denomination, rendered as 2 1/2 D. The traditional mottos E Pluribus Unum and In God We Trust are also featured, completing a design that captures the spirit of mid nineteenth century America.
