1858 Flying Eagle Cent Large Letters AU Details

0.0000 troy oz 1858 Almost Unc

In the late 1850s, the United States Mint introduced a dramatic departure from its traditional coinage with the Flying Eagle cent. Minted in Philadelphia, this 1858 issue represents the final year of a brief but highly influential series that ran from 1856 to 1858. Unlike the pure copper cents of the past, this new coin was struck in a durable alloy of copper and nickel, giving it a lighter, distinct appearance. The obverse features a powerful image of an eagle soaring through the air, designed by James B. Longacre. Encircling the flying bird are the bold letters of the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" alongside the date 1858. This particular variety is distinguished by the "Large Letters" style of the legend. On the reverse, the coin emphasizes simplicity and utility. The denomination "ONE CENT" is positioned directly in the center, framed by an ornamental wreath. This specimen, graded in Almost Uncirculated condition, showcases the remarkable detail of a short-lived design that helped redefine American pocket change.
