0.0000 troy oz 1858 Very Fine

In the late 1850s, a dramatic shift occurred in American coinage with the introduction of the Flying Eagle Cent. This 1858 issue, preserved in Very Fine condition, showcases a striking departure from earlier coin designs. The obverse features a magnificent eagle soaring through the air, captured in mid-flight. Surrounding this powerful symbol of freedom is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the year 1858 anchored at the bottom. The reverse of the coin presents a delicate wreath that encircles the denomination, which is spelled out simply as ONE CENT. Designed by James B. Longacre, this short-lived series was only produced from 1856 to 1858, making this particular coin one of the final representatives of its type. Struck in a durable copper-nickel alloy at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin represents a fascinating transitional moment in the history of United States currency.
