0.9675 troy oz .900 1858 PCGS

In 1858, the branch mint in San Francisco struck 846,710 gold double eagles, each containing nearly a full ounce of gold with a purity of 0.900. These large, heavy coins circulated heavily in the western economy, meaning very few survived in high-grade condition. This particular survivor has been graded as About Uncirculated 55 (AU-55), showing only light wear from its time in commerce. Bearing the 'S' mint mark on the reverse, this piece of early California minting history represents a time when gold coins were the backbone of trade. The obverse features the classic Liberty design, dated 1858, while the reverse displays the heraldic eagle of the United States.
