In the years leading up to and during the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced a distinct variety of the Indian Head cent. Struck between 1859 and 1864, these early issues are notable for their specific metal composition, which consists of 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel. This particular alloy gave the coins a lighter, thicker appearance compared to the bronze cents that followed, making them a fascinating transitional chapter in American numismatics. The obverse of the coin features a depiction of Liberty adorned in a Native American feathered headdress, surrounded by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This design, created by James B. Longacre, offers a stylized representation of national identity from the mid nineteenth century. On the reverse, the face value "ONE CENT" is simply and elegantly displayed, nestled within a decorative wreath. These Philadelphia Mint issues, preserved in average circulated condition, carry the physical wear of an era defined by immense national change. Exploring these copper-nickel cents allows us to appreciate the evolving artistry and metallurgy of early United States coinage.
