1859 Indian Head Cent AU-50 PCGS

0.0000 troy oz 1859 Almost Unc - 50 (PCGS)

The year 1859 marked a major transition in American numismatics with the introduction of the Indian Head Cent. This first-year issue is particularly notable for its unique reverse design, which was used only for this single year of production. Unlike the oak wreath and shield seen on later issues, the reverse of this 1859 coin displays the words ONE CENT nestled inside a simple laurel wreath. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse of the coin depicts Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress, surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1859. Despite the name, the profile is actually a representation of Liberty rather than a Native American figure. Struck in a durable alloy of copper and nickel, this specific specimen has survived in an impressive Almost Uncirculated 50 condition. The coin offers a fascinating look at the very beginning of one of America's most beloved and longest-running minor coin series.
