The year 1859 marked the debut of a classic American coin design, the Indian Head Cent. This first-year issue stands out from its successors due to a specific reverse design used only for this single year of production. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, these early cents were composed of an alloy containing 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, giving them a distinct lighter appearance compared to later bronze issues. The obverse features a depiction of Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress, surrounded by the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the date "1859" positioned at the bottom. This representation of Liberty was created by designer James B. Longacre. On the reverse, the words "ONE CENT" are enclosed within a simple laurel wreath. This specific wreath design was replaced in subsequent years, making the 1859 issue a highly distinct variety within the beloved Indian Head series.
