The year 1859 marked a major transition in American minor coinage with the debut of the Indian Head cent. Designed by James B. Longacre, this first-year issue presents a distinct aesthetic that sets it apart from the rest of the long-running series. The obverse features a representation of Liberty adorned with an Native American feathered headdress, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1859 at the bottom. What makes the 1859 issue particularly fascinating to study is its reverse. Unlike the oak wreath and shield design that became standard in 1860, this inaugural version displays the denomination ONE CENT enclosed within a simple, elegant laurel wreath. Strikingly different in composition from modern pennies, this coin was minted from an alloy of 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, giving it a lighter, thicker appearance. This specific coin survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the fine details of the feathers and the delicate leaves of the wreath for modern observers to appreciate.
