1859-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar VG

0.3599 troy oz .900 1859 Very Good

In 1859, the New Orleans Mint produced a silver half dollar that captures a transformative era in American coinage. Struck with a purity of 90 percent silver, this fifty-cent piece carries the distinctive 'O' mint mark, signaling its origin in the historic Southern port city. Christian Gobrecht designed the coin's artwork. The front of the coin displays Liberty in a seated position, grasping a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests upon a shield. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted perched on a branch, grasping three arrows, with a shield positioned over its chest. Surviving in Very Good condition, this coin offers a tangible look at mid-nineteenth-century craftsmanship. The legends on the metal include the year 1859 on the obverse, while the reverse displays the denomination abbreviated as HALF DOL. alongside the country name, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
