Dating from the final years of traditional Japanese currency, this gold Koban represents the Man'en Era, which spanned from 1860 to 1867. Minted during the reign of Emperor Komei, this intriguing piece of currency carries a nominal value of 1 Ryo. Weighing 3.32 grams, with a gold content of 0.0609 troy ounces, the coin is a physical artifact of a transitional period in Japanese history. The visual presentation of the Koban is entirely distinct from Western coinage of the same period. The obverse displays a textured surface of fine crenulations, accompanied by calligraphy set within rectangular frames and a delicate fan shape.
