While the obverse continued to display the profile of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American feather headdress, the reverse underwent a major transformation from the previous year's design. On the reverse side of this copper-nickel coin, the central denomination of "ONE CENT" is encircled by a detailed wreath. For the first time in 1860, a prominent shield was added to the very top of this wreath. At the bottom, a bundle of arrows is secured with a ribbon bow, creating a powerful visual balance.
