1860 Three Cent Silver AU

In the mid nineteenth century, the United States minted one of its most unusual and smallest denominations, the silver three-cent piece. This particular specimen from 1860, preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, offers a remarkably clear look at a design that departed significantly from traditional American coinage of the era. The obverse features a prominent six-pointed star, at the center of which sits a detailed shield. Encircling this central motif is the inscription of the issuing nation, part of which is visible as "STATES", alongside the 1860 year of manufacture. This geometric focus gives the coin a distinct visual character compared to the portrait-dominated coinage of later decades. On the reverse, the coin displays a large, stylized Roman numeral "III" nestled within an ornamental C-shaped design. This clear denomination marking ensured there was no confusion about the value of this diminutive silver coin. Designed by James Longacre, this issue from the Philadelphia Mint had a mintage of 286,000 pieces, making it a fascinating survivor of pre-1933 American silver production.
