This 1861 quarter eagle represents a fascinating moment in American numismatic history, struck at the Philadelphia Mint just as the country stood on the precipice of momentous change. Containing 0.12094 ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this 2.50 dollar denomination is a remarkable survivor of its era. Out of an original mintage of 1,283,788 pieces, this particular specimen has survived in a highly desirable certified state, graded as Almost Uncirculated 55. The design of this gold coin is the work of Christian Gobrecht. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. Her hair band is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The reverse features a classic heraldic eagle bearing a shield across its chest, clutching symbols of national strength. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, written as 2 1/2 D.
