0.1209 troy oz .900 1861 Almost Unc

Struck during a pivotal year in American history, this 1861 gold quarter eagle represents a classic era of United States coinage. Minted at the Philadelphia facility, the coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.1209 troy ounces of the precious metal. It survives today in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of its mid nineteenth century craftsmanship. The obverse features a left facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her, symbolizing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield draped across its chest. The eagle is surrounded by the legend denoting the United States of America, with the face value of two and a half dollars designated below. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this enduring motif was produced by the U.S. Mint from 1840 all the way to 1907.
