1861 Indian Head Cent XF

0.0000 troy oz 1861 Extra Fine

In the opening year of the American Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint produced a distinctive version of the Indian Head cent. Unlike the pure copper cents of later decades, this 1861 issue was struck in a robust copper-nickel alloy, giving it a slightly thicker feel and a lighter hue than its pure copper successors. The obverse features a striking depiction of Liberty. Rather than wearing a traditional cap, she is adorned in an Native American feathered headdress, with the word LIBERTY clearly displayed. Encircling this central portrait is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the year 1861 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a simple yet elegant wreath frames the denomination. The words ONE CENT are boldly struck in the center of the design. Preserved in Extra Fine condition, this coin offers a remarkably clear look at the intricate details of the feathers and the wreath, serving as a tangible survivor from a pivotal moment in American history.
