During the turbulent second year of the American Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint produced this tiny treasure of United States coinage. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, this 1862 one-dollar coin contains a delicate 0.0484 troy ounces of precious metal. Despite the massive upheavals of its era, a total of 1,361,355 of these pieces were minted, bearing no mint mark as was customary for the Philadelphia facility at the time. The obverse of the coin showcases the distinctive Indian Head design, a celebrated motif in the pre-1933 American gold series. On the reverse, the denomination is clearly marked as "1 DOLLAR" above the historic year "1862." Finding a delicate gold coin of this size that has survived the generations in exceptional condition is a rare treat for numismatic enthusiasts.
