1862 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle AU-55 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1862 PCGS

Struck during the turbulent second year of the American Civil War, this 1862 Liberty Gold Double Eagle represents a fascinating moment in United States numismatic history. While paper currency began to dominate daily commerce in this era, the Philadelphia Mint continued to produce these substantial gold pieces, though in limited numbers. Only 92,133 of these twenty dollar coins were minted at the main facility, making any surviving example a compelling object of study. This particular coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. The obverse features the classic Liberty design, with the date 1862 clearly visible beneath her portrait and the word LIBERTY inscribed upon her coronet. Having survived the decades with much of its original detail intact, this specimen has been officially graded as About Uncirculated 55 (AU-55), showing only light wear from its brief time in circulation before being preserved for future generations.
